Yesterday, my mom and I had the honor of seeing part of the mega pod of dolphins that has magically migrated through San Diego during the last week! Talk about timing...my mom is visiting from Seattle for a couple weeks and just happened to be here during one of the most amazing, historical times in the sea life of San Diego! The mega pod was spotted last Thursday and was reported to be 100,000 dolphins, seven miles long by five miles wide, the size of Manhattan!
We were visiting the La Jolla Cove and spotted a couple thousand of them off the coast close to the Shores. Thankfully, we were near a lifeguard station and were able to view this spectacle through high-tech binoculars! Oh, they were so gorgeous!!! They were the most joyful looking creatures I've ever seen in my life...jumping way out of the water and playing! The entire rest of the day, I was completely awestruck! And I see dolphins every single day, but nothing like what I saw yesterday. These dolphins were smaller than the usual, and dark gray with a white belly and sides. I watched them swim toward the shore, and then back out to sea, until they disappeared off into the distance. Then another jumping pod swam through! I will never forget the Magic of watching that pod of a few thousand dolphins...one of the best days of my life!
